  • 1966 - 1967 industrial internship with Robert Bosch GmbH, Stuttgart

  • 1967 – 1971 studies at the Ulm Design School, the School of Arts and Crafts at Kassel and atthe Institute of Environmental Planning of the University of Stuttgart. Diploma of the Ulm Design School

  • 1969 - 1971 free-lance scientific assistant with AW design, Arbeits-gemeinschaft der Wirtschaft für Produktdesign und Produktplanung e.V., Stuttgart.

  • 1971 - 1972 studies of Business Economy and Political Economy at the University of Stuttgart.

  • Since 1971 free-lance designer and consultant for product planning and product design.

  • 1972 appointment as lecturer at the Hochschule für Gestaltung (HfG) Offenbach am Main, Dept Industrial Design

  • 1979 appointment as Professor with Design Methodology, Product Planning, Interface/interaction Design and Strategic Design as main working fields

  • 1976 – 1981, in cooperation with Prof. Richard Fischer, head of the working group ‘Medical Equipment’ to redesign the product program of the Drägerwerk AG Lübeck.

  • 1979 appointment as Professor with Design Methodology, Product Planning, Interface/interaction Design and Strategic Design as main working fields

  • 1980 - 1982  head of the research group ‘Design for Wheelchairs’ funded by the German Ministry of Research and Technology, Bonn.

  • 1984 - 1991 head of CAD study group (Computer Aided Design) at the HfG Offenbach am Main

  • 1990 co-founder of the design office Vision & Gestalt in Obertshausen / Frankfurt am Main

  • 1992 - 1995 co-founder and scientific head of the study group Interfacelifting, Schnittstelle für Elektronisches Design’ at the HfG Offenbach am Main.

  • 1995-2005 member of the International Advisory Board of the Faculty of Industrial Design Engineering at Delft University of Technology, the Netherlands.

  • 1996 - 2001 scientific and design-orientated cooperation with Prof. Dr. Jürgen Krause, University of Koblenz-Landau/Informationszentrum Sozialwissenschaften Bonn and Prof. Dr. Walter Bauer-Wabnegg, FH Aachen / Bauhaus-Universität Weimar on problems of the visualization of informational processes.

  • 1996 - 2002 co-editor of „formdiskurs“, Journal for Design and Theory.

  • 1997 - 1998 member of the faculty council of the newly established Faculty of Media at the Bauhaus University in Weimar.

  • Since 2002  member of the advisory board of ‘form – The European Design Magazine’

  • 2000 to 2001 research project sponsored by the German Ministry of Research and Technology ‘Development of a Knowledge-Based Internet System for Social Sciences’, in cooperation with the University of Cologne and the Bonn Institute for Social Sciences.

  • 2003 founder member of DGTF (German Society of Design Theory and Design Research)

  • member of juries, among others for ‚Deutscher Studienpreis’ (the student research competition of the Körber Foundation in Hamburg) and for ‘Design Innovations’ of the Design Center North Rhine-Westphalia., member of commissions for accreditation and evaluation (Austria, Italy. Lithuania, the Netherlands, Portugal)

  • member of the academic advisory council of ‚i-com – Journal for interactive and cooperative media’, since 2008 member of the academic advisory board of the English Journal of Design History, member of the Editorial Board of IJD, International Journal of Design.

  • 2008 founder member of GfDg (German Society of Design History)
